GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CURRICULUM

L.I.S. provides schooling in English from Reception Class to Primary 6, with a bilingual Mandarin-English Reception Class and Mandarin classes multiple times a week at primary level.

We follow the requirements of the British Curriculum and twice a year we administer National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) assessments from Primary 1 to Primary 6 – the leading independent provider of education research in the United Kingdom.

In Hong Kong, primary school lasts 6 years and the Education Bureau in Hong Kong requires that children start primary school by the age of 6. According to the British Curriculum in the United Kingdom, children must be in Reception Class at age 4. They must start Primary 1 at age 5 as they must be in full-time education by the term following their fifth birthday.

We focus on the core topics of English (writing, grammar and spelling), maths and science and also teach history, geography, art and music. From Primary 4 to Primary 6, we add weekly computer and coding lessons using robots for hands-on learning. To develop our students’ confidence in maths, we use Mathletics, the world’s leading online maths program, to supplement class teaching. We also encourage our children to read every day and hold an annual summer Reading Challenge across the school to help our students keep up good reading habits during the summer break.

Many of our pupils speak more than one language at an early age. At L.I.S. we encourage multilingualism and have a bilingual Mandarin-English Reception Class and provide mandarin classes multiple times a week at primary level.

L.I.S. takes full advantage of its green surroundings with many outdoor activities such as regular P.E. classes on the beach, camping trips, school hikes, outdoor nature lessons and occasionally unexpected encounters with the rich fauna of Lantau Island!

TERM PERIOD

L.I.S. has around 182 days of schooling a year divided into three terms (Term 1 runs from around the last week of August to 31 December, Term 2 from January to March and Term 3 from April to around the last week of June).

At the beginning of each school year, the complete school calendar with all holiday days and term breaks are published on the website (see school calendar) and is provided in pupils’ handbooks.
